Home Sweet (Temporary) Home

We are renting an apartment for a month through AirBnb while I try to find us a real house. It's bigger than a hotel but a pretty small space for 4 people and 2 animals to share, at least by American standards. Really, everything is MUCH smaller here by American standards.

Here's our street:

Dahlmannstrasse

Dahlmanstrasse 6

 And here is our building:

Here is our less than scenic front door on the 4th floor of the building:

And this is pretty much the entire apartment! The front door is directly to the right in the picture. There is a bathroom directly to the left whose door you can't see. Then there are two doors down the hallway to the left and a single room at the end. The first door is to the kitchen, where Diablo is standing. The second door is to the bedroom. That's all there is!!

Here is the long narrow bathroom. That white thing in the front of the picture is the sink. The world's tiniest washing machine is also to the right just out of the picture. There is a pretty large bathtub with an awful circular shower curtain that creates a circle just large enough to stand in but not so large that you can shower without it touching you and sticking to your back - ew! Haley is over by the toilet at the end.
And here is the long narrow kitchen. The large cabinet in the foreground is the refrigerator. Apparently here the frig looks like a cabinet, not like an appliance.

This is the inside of the frig after a shopping trip. It is absolutely PACKED with a couple of bottles of juice and milk, some yogurt and jam, milk, one container of leftovers, and a couple of fruits.  So different from our enormous frig back at home. Here people shop every day or every couple of days. You can't even buy a gallon of milk at the store. Everything is small and meant to be replenished often. And do you see that open compartment at the top? That's the FREEZER!!!! I guess people don't freeze things here. It's only big enough for some ice trays.

This is the view from our kitchen window. Could be worse, but I am already missing Montana's glory.

Here is the master bedroom. And the lovely art hanging over the bed (for inspiration??)

And this is our final room, the living room/kids' bedroom. There is a table and chairs, a bed, a pullout couch and some dressers. Most apartements don't have closets, so you buy your storage as furniture. The big mirrored thing is an armoire, and there is a dresser on each side.  The space is a bit cramped, but it's livable for now. Diablo misses his green couch but is making due on the floor. There's a fairly cozy rug in the living room that both animals have adopted, since the whole apartment is otherwise hardwood flooring.

  1. Jen--we are loving following along as you settle in to Berlin. We've never lived overseas, but we have rented apartments for a month at a time and tried our hand at living like a local. Hugs all round, Kelly
